Ingredients

  • 1-1.5 pounds flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil, divided into two equal portions
  • 2 cups broccoli, cut into bite-sized florets
  • 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 garlic glove, minced
  • 4 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • Water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • Salt
  • Pepper

It comes together in under 30 minutes in one pan, which means less cleanup for busy parents. The dish offers a healthy balance of protein and vegetables, it is easy to customize by swapping in different veggies or proteins. Leftovers reheat well for lunches or after-school meals. This recipe hits the mark for quick, nutritious, and kid-friendly dinners.

Save more time by getting pre-cut broccoli florets. Feel free to pack the dish with more veggies, including carrots, bell peppers, or snow pears. 

If your kids can tolerate heat, mix in a tablespoon of Sambal Oelek or similar chili-based hot sauce.  

The dish pairs well with Instant Rice.

Instructions

  • Make the sauce and cornstarch mixture
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the oyster sauce, ¼ cup water water, sugar, sesame oil, and soy sauce
    • In a separate small bow, mix the cornstarch with a tablespoon of water. 
    • Set both bowls aside for later.

  • Cook the broccoli and aromatics
    • Add 1 tablespoon of oil to a large frying pan or skillet over medium heat.
    • Add the broccoli and cook for 4 minutes.
    • Toss in the ginger and garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
    • Remove everything from the skillet and add to a plate. Cover and set aside for later

  • Stir fry the steak
    • Clean the pan with a paper towel. Return the pan to the burner and set the heat to high. Add a tablespoon of oil.
    • Season the steak with 1 teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper.
    • Add the steak to the frying pan in a single layer and cook for 3-4 minutes per side.
    • Return the broccoli mixture to the pan and cook for another 90 seconds.
    • Grab the bowl with the oyster sauce mixture and pour it into the pan. Cook for 30-60 seconds.
    • Add the cornstarch mixture to the pan and bring to a boil. Once boiling, cook for another 60 seconds until the sauce thickens.

  • Serve
    • Divide into equal portions and serve, preferably with a side of rice. 
    • Season with salt and pepper if needed.
