Maple is what it is because we have leaned into DEI

Jul 14, 2025 - By Michael Perry

I have been debating saying anything, but the disappointment is overwhelming. Our leaders are leading us in the wrong direction. The current take on DEI is entirely wrong. DEI is not a bad thing that should be dissolved or hated- it's actually a great thing that needs to be elevated. To think otherwise is actually, frankly, insane.

Diversity in your leadership creates space for more perspective to be woven into your product, marketing, company values etc. It is not a company handicap, it's a company super power.

When I started Maple, I knew my perspective as a father wouldn't be enough. We prioritized speaking to women in venture- raising money from Inspired Capital, Able Partners and G9 Ventures - all funds led by mothers. All who have given us excellent feedback, and influenced a lot of Maple today.

In our earliest days- when it came to building our brand, I needed a sparring partner. The first person I called was my dear friend, Willow Hill, and had the privilege of working with her and her team at Scout Lab.

Most people don't know- we use a almond color for Maple because it was the most inclusive color- it came from the tone that represent the palm of our hand.

I could not be the only voice of Maple - I am a father. Lauren Ezzell, a mother of 2, is equally a face of our company, and she fights for working mothers in every product and marketing discussion. The list of examples could go on.

Maple is what it is because we have leaned into DEI. We have been able to build for parents (not just moms or dads). We have been able to build for more household setups, not just one type.

Great leadership is not just about raising market caps, it's about being the tide that rises all boats. Great leaders find away to do both.

Maple will continue to be a place that looks for more perspective to accomplish our mission, and to build a work environment that reflects that desire.
