The Spring Closet Reset for Kids
The Spring Closet Reset for Kids
How to clear the chaos, keep what matters, and let the rest move on—without overwhelm
There’s a moment every spring when I open my kids’ closets and think:
How did we get here?
Pants that somehow shrunk overnight.
Three versions of the same sweatshirt.
Pieces I loved… that no longer fit anyone.
And underneath all of it—if I’m being honest—is a quiet resistance.
Because it’s not just about cleaning out a closet.
It’s about letting go.
As a mom, I’ve felt this every single season. And as the founder of Prelove You, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about why this process feels so overwhelming—and how to make it simpler, lighter, and even… meaningful.
Here’s the system I keep coming back to. It’s realistic, it works with kids (not against them), and it introduces a new way to think about what happens after you clean out.
Step 1: Start Small (Like, Really Small)
Forget the whole closet.
Start with one category:
- Pajamas
- Pants
- Sweatshirts
That’s it.
When we try to do everything at once, we stall before we begin. But when it’s just one drawer, it feels doable—and momentum builds quickly from there.
Tip: Put on music, set a 20-minute timer, and call it a win when the timer ends.
Step 2: Try-On, Don’t Guess
We think we know what fits.
We don’t.
Kids grow in unpredictable ways—something that fit last month suddenly doesn’t, and something you assumed was too small somehow still works.
Have your child try things on quickly:
- If it fits and they feel good → keep
- If it fits but they don’t love it → question it
- If it doesn’t fit → immediate move-out
Step 3: Create 3 Simple Piles
Keep it simple:
- KEEP → fits, loved, worn often
- MAYBE → sentimental or unsure
- MOVE ON → outgrown or unworn
The goal is not perfection—it’s clarity.
Step 4: Let Your Kids Be Part of It
This is where everything shifts.
Instead of deciding for them, invite them in:
- “Do you still feel like you in this?”
- “Would you be excited to wear this again?”
They start to build taste, confidence, and ownership.
And importantly—they begin to understand that clothing has value.
Step 5: Rethink What “Letting Go” Means
This is the part that used to stop me.
Because traditionally, your options are limited:
- Store it (and forget about it)
- Donate it (and never see it again)
- Pass it along (if you’re lucky enough to have someone lined up)
But none of those options really close the loop.
This is exactly why I built Prelove You—because I wanted a system where letting go didn’t feel like loss.
Instead of your kids’ outgrown clothes sitting in bags or leaving your home with no return, they become part of a circular exchange.
Here’s how it works:
- You send in the pieces your kids have outgrown
- Each item is evaluated and assigned credits based on quality and condition
- Those credits become your currency to shop for what your child needs next
So instead of starting from zero every season, you’re building from what you already have.
Step 6: Turn the “Move On” Pile Into Momentum
Once you’ve sorted everything, don’t let that pile linger.
This is your moment of forward motion.
Bag it, move it out—and if you’re using Prelove You, this is where the shift really happens.
Because your child can actually see the exchange:
- “These jeans I outgrew helped me get that new hoodie”
- “That dress I loved is now helping another kid, and I get to choose something new”
It creates a completely different relationship with clothing.
- Less waste
- Less guilt
- More agency
Step 7: Rebuild with Intention, Not Overwhelm
Now look at what’s left.
This is your child’s real wardrobe:
- What fits
- What they love
- What they actually wear
From here, you can thoughtfully fill in gaps.
And this is where the credit system becomes incredibly practical—because instead of overbuying “just in case,” you can:
- Browse what’s available
- Let your child choose pieces they’re excited about
- Use credits instead of constantly spending new money
It’s a shift from reactive shopping → intentional replenishment.
A Different Way to Think About Kids’ Clothing
The biggest mindset change for me was this:
Clothing isn’t something we’re meant to hold onto forever.
It’s something that’s meant to move.
Through our kids.
Through stages.
Through different homes.
Prelove You isn’t just about clearing space—it’s about creating a system where:
- nothing sits unused
- nothing feels wasted
- every piece continues its story
Make It Lighter (Because It Should Be)
This doesn’t have to be a once-a-year, overwhelming reset.
It can be:
- a 20-minute habit
- a seasonal rhythm
- a conversation with your kids
And when there’s a system in place for what happens after you clean out—
everything feels easier.
Because you’re no longer just getting rid of things.
You’re making room, creating value, and moving forward—intentionally.
